Information for Patients

New to sleep studies? This page explains what to expect, how to prepare and what happens after your test.

Before your study

Once your doctor has referred you, our team will contact you to arrange a suitable date and location. We will also confirm any costs and Medicare or health fund details.

What to bring

  • Referral from your doctor (if not already sent)
  • Medicare card and any private health insurance details
  • Current medication list
  • Comfortable sleepwear

On the day of your study

During the study

A sleep technologist or technician will explain the procedure, apply the sensors and answer any questions. The sensors are designed to be as comfortable as possible while still collecting accurate information.

After the study

After the recording is finished, you can usually go home or to work as normal. The data is processed and reported, and the results are sent back to your referring doctor.

How long until I get results?

In most cases your doctor will receive the report within 2 weeks. Urgent results can be prioritised – please ask your doctor to indicate this on the referral.

Common questions

Will a sleep study hurt?

No. The sensors sit on the surface of the skin or are gently taped in place. You might feel a bit “wired up” at first, but there is no pain.

Can I get up during the night?

Yes. For both home and hospital studies you can get up to use the bathroom. Staff will show you how to do this without disconnecting important sensors.

What if I’m a shift worker?

Please let us and your doctor know your usual sleep pattern. In many cases we can time the study to match your normal sleep schedule as closely as possible.
